Artist: Eliana Perez
Eliana Perez (b. Sept. 23, 1992) is a Mexican artist whose work celebrates life and experience, where beauty comes from the delicacy and transparency that express herself, and from the gestures of the figures and the body parts that she fades in and out from the surface. Imperfection is her way of perceiving the figure, and she express herself by decomposing. She draws inspiration from the past and people and how they interpreted life and created their own images. She acknowledges that creating and sharing her interpretations give her the ability of opening a dialogue between herself and the spectator, which inspires her to do more and explore her perspective of things and others.
“To me being an artist has a lot to do with going back to that state of enjoyment and learning process that I felt when I was young. Losing myself invested in something that is so primitive yet makes you wonder what else can be done. Knowing that others can relate to your creations (good or bad) and that they can read a language that you developed, gives me a strange satisfaction. Realizing that every step I make is a step forward to what I’ve been searching for and that I feel again young, and careless, and happy, and free. All these little things made me understand that I was meant to keep doing this, to carry a message and pass it to someone else.”
She received her MFA at the New York Academy of Art in 2018. She acquired her BFA at Altos de Chavón School of Design in Dominican Republic and transferred with a full scholarship in 2016 to finish Fine Arts/Illustration at Parsons’ The New School. She has participated in group exhibitions in New York and the Dominican Republic. She also freelances as an illustrator and graphic designer and has done design work such as logos, branding, editorial illustrations, and advertisement for companies, websites, and non-governmental organizations. She currently lives and works in New York.
